MEXICO is a country in Central American.

Population

When Doctor Who screened in Mexico in 1968, the population was 39 million, and licensed TV sets numbered 1.8 million (per WRTH, 1966).

In 1979 WRTH, it was DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.

TV & system

Mexico began its television service in 1950.

There are many television stations: Televisa S. A. a government-owned commercial broadcaster, which operated channel 5.

Colour transmissions began in 1963 using the NTSC colour broadcast system.

The main language of Mexico is Spanish.

DOCTOR WHO IN MEXICO

Mexico was the 25th country to screen Doctor Who. It was the second to screen the series in Spanish (see Selling Doctor Who).

BBC Records

The Seventies records a sale of 9 stories by 28 February 1977. The Handbook identifies these as being: A, C, E, F, G, J, L and Q. The total of 9 is due to Mexico being listed twice under J.

In DWM, Mexico is identified in 29 story Archives: 12 Hartnells - the same as the 1977 list above, plus B, K, N and R; and 17 Tom Bakers: all the stories from 4A to 4Z, but omitting 4A, 4L, 4R, 4X, 4Y and 4Z.

In DWM 52 (xxx), a Mexican fan wrote a letter sating that: "dddddddddddd".

Mexico therefore bought the standard package of the GROUP A to ?????E of the William Hartnell stories that were dubbed into Spanish.

The programme was supplied as 16mm black and white film prints with Spanish soundtracks.

However, the website DOCTOR WHO IN MEXICO does suggest that the programmes may have been supplied on and broadcast from video tape, and that these tapes were wiped over with coverage of the Mexico Olympic Games!

Fate of the Prints?

The next Spanish-speaking country to air Doctor Who was Mexico, in March 1968. It is possible that Mexico sent its prints of the Hartnell stories to Mexico.
